The diary was the first of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes to be destroyed, by Harry Potter in the Chamber of Secrets, who stabbed it with the fang of the very Basilisk that was used to commit murder in the first place.
Harry then took one of the Basilisk's fangs and stabbed the diary with it. This successfully destroyed the Horcrux, as basilisk venom was ironically one of the few substances that could destroy it beyond magical repair.
After being healed, Harry took the fang and stabbed Riddle's diary, destroying that Horcrux beyond magical repair. Because Harry had stabbed the Basilisk with the sword, it was imbued with Basilisk venom, and was therefore able to destroy Horcruxes as well.
Dumbledore told Harry in Half-Blood Prince that Tom Riddle's diary had been his first clue that Voldemort had created a Horcrux and that there was likely more than one.
Before Lord Voldemort's first defeat in 1981, the diary was passed to Death Eater Lucius Malfoy, who kept the diary, in secret, before slipping it into Ginny Weasley's cauldron of school supplies at Flourish and Blotts in 1992.

1929 – June 1943), more commonly known after her death as Moaning Myrtle, was a Muggle-born witch who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1940 to 1943 and was sorted into Ravenclaw house. She was killed in 1943 by the Serpent of Slytherin, which had been released by Tom Riddle.

The only way to destroy the Horcrux inside Harry is by killing Harry, which is the equivalent of destroying beyond repair. Harry didn't died in the chamber of secrets because although the Basiliks is poisonous Fawkes saved him. So an alive Harry means that the Horcrux is still there.
Because the basilisk is a snake and snake venom doesn't kill instantly although some of it kills faster than others. The basilisk venom doesn't have a chance to kill Harry before the anti venom (Phoenix tears) is applied. Also the horcrux wasn't destroyed because horcruxes don't die when they touch basilis...
Dumbledore himself provides it for us: ”But [Lucius] went ahead and carried out the old plan for his own ends; By planting the diary upon Arthur Weasley's daughter, he hoped to discredit Arthur and get rid of a highly incriminating magical object in one stroke.” (HBP23) This itself raises some funny questions.
Lucius Malfoy didn't seem to understand just how valuable the diary actually was to Voldemort or that it contained a piece of his soul. He just thought it was an excellent way to get rid of Muggle-borns.
In his third year at Hogwarts, Hagrid was caught talking to Aragog in the dungeons by Tom Riddle, who alleged that Aragog was the "Monster of Slytherin", and that Hagrid had opened the Chamber of Secrets. In fact, it was Riddle who had opened the Chamber, and the monster was actually a basilisk.

By Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it's a stretch to call Draco a villain anymore. We just watched — or read — him struggle to reconcile his choices and morals in The Half-Blood Prince. He can no longer justify his actions, and is far more aware of the evil he was born and raised into.
The prophecy is mentioned throughout the series, however, it never exclusively mentions that Harry is The Chosen One and suggests Neville was another option. However, one theory explains why, in reality, this wasn't possible.
