The stones' power, combined with Thor's lightning and Thanos' surprise, likely prevented him from using the gauntlet's full power. In a meta sense, Thor's near-victory in Infinity War showed how close both parties were to victory before Thanos ultimately prevailed.

Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained that the reason Stormbreaker was able to take the brunt of six Infinity Stones was because it was the greatest weapon ever made and Thanos was caught off-guard, having only realized what that weapon was after he was struck by it.
Many viewers have pointed out that Thanos was able to lift Stormbreaker without a problem, but this is because the ax isn't enchanted as Mjolnir is. Others believe Thanos lifted Mjolnir (although briefly) and have even argued that he would be worthy of doing so.

How was Stormbreaker able to overpower the Infinity Gauntlet?
In need of a new weapon after the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Thor used the Dwarven forge on Nidavellir to craft Stormbreaker. Due to both the nature of the weapon and Thor's attack on Thanos, Stormbreaker successfully powered through an energy blast from all six stones and dealt a near-lethal blow to Thanos.
Meanwhile, MCU Phase 4 saw Stormbreaker being wielded by Thor, Gorr the God Butcher, Love, and anyone else who was strong enough to actually lift and swing it. This is because of the respective origins of both legendary Asgardian weapons.

So, he chose to hold himself back, allowing some Asgardians to escape with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Taika Waititi).
The hammer Stormbreaker is very similar to Mjolnir, made of mystic Uru metal and is nearly indestructible. Worthiness: Just like the original Mjolnir, no one can lift Stormbreaker who is not worthy. After the founding of New Korbin, there was a line of aliens and Korbinites all attempting to lift Stormbreaker.
Thor hypes up the weapon which eventually became Stormbreaker in Infinity War as the "Thanos-killing kind" of weapon. However, there is a clear weakness between Stormbreaker and Mjolnir.
The movie doesn't explain Thor's motivations for giving up Stormbreaker, but it makes sense that Chris Hemsworth simply wanted Love to have a powerful weapon to aid her in battle. It's unlikely that he could give her Mjolnir, considering that so few people in the MCU have been deemed worthy of its power.
Why does Thor like Mjolnir more than Stormbreaker?
It may be weaker than Stormbreaker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's lore, but Mjolnir carries the bigger legacy since it holds a deeper meaning to Thor and anyone was worthy enough to wield its power.
However, if you mean comics Thor, he can destroy planets bare handed. His powers over the storm arent dependent on a hammer. If you mean the MCU, then I would have to say yes. Eitri stated that Stormbreaker was created to surpass every weapon made before it, and Odin stated Mjolnir's power was enough to destroy worlds.
Thanos can't lift Mjolnir… usually. The parameters for “worthiness” in Mjolnir's enchantment are rather vaguely defined, people tend to debate a lot about what exactly constitutes someone as “worthy”.
Gorr the God Butcher possesses enhanced strength, durability, and agility due to his alien physiology and absorption of divine energy. Stormbreaker, a powerful enchanted weapon forged by Eitri, allows beings of sufficient strength, like Gorr, to wield it.
Rather than simply being righteous warriors, Mjolnir's wielders need to be on the front lines of huge threats to the Ten Realms. This explains why in Age of Ultron, the MCU's Cap could only shift Mjolnir slightly –he was not yet the "tip of the spear." Later, facing off against Thanos elevated him to full worthiness.
