Ariel, a sixteen-year-old mermaid princess, is dissatisfied with life under the sea and curious about the human world. With her best fish friend Flounder, Ariel collects human artifacts and goes to the surface of the ocean to visit Scuttle the seagull, who offers very inaccurate and comical knowledge of human culture.
Unlike Cinderella, Ariel is already a princess, but her interest in the human world leaves her unsatisfied with her life under sea and leads her to pursue her love for Prince Eric. It is this very behavior that distinguishes her from other Disney princesses, but makes her like them as well.
Ariel dreams of life outside the water, up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in the sun. Against her father's wishes, she explores shipwrecks and goes above the surface to watch the humans on land or ships. She collects their items and wants to know all about people.
With Ursula dead, everyone is safe and Triton is restored to his full form with him and Ariel reuniting. But, Ariel still longs for a life away from the sea so later on, Triton changes her from mermaid to human and she reunites with Eric, and they share a kiss.
Ariel giving up her voice to Ursula wasn't just about being with Eric. Ariel longed to be on land, to experience what it means to be human, and to explore the surface world. Eric was merely a catalyst for her to do just that; her growing feelings for him tethered her further to the human world.
Rather, Ursula's appearance is radically different from her family, and she sports tentacles that look like a permanent black dress. It's possible Ursula is not a mermaid in appearance because she and Triton did not have the same mother or father. If they're half siblings, Ursula's tentacles make more sense.

At the end of the 1989 animated film, Eric saves the day and kills Ursula. But in the new movie, Ariel is no longer the damsel in distress. She takes matters into her own hands and kills Ursula herself.

In the animated movie, when King Triton gives Ariel back her human form, she walks right into Eric's arms. But, for the new version, Eric can be seen missing Ariel at the palace while playing with Max, and she sneaks up on him. It's such a small change, but really shows how much Eric loves Ariel as he hugs her.
