Smaug continues his search and claims that he is aware of the Ring in Bilbo's possession and that he sensed that Bilbo has something "made of gold, but far more precious," which in turn forces the Hobbit to remove the Ring.
Smaug is able to detect Bilbo through the Ring's invisibility, but the hobbit does not even need the Ring to survive the meeting with the dragon, relying on his wits to flatter the dragon and eventually escape.
As soon as they claimed it as their own, they were totally ensnared by its whiles. The only reason that Bilbo was able to give up the Ring was because of Gandalf's influence. The Grey Wizard showed Bilbo a glimpse of his Maiaric power, which definitely got the Hobbit's attention.
Why doesn't Gandalf take the Ring from Bilbo in the hobbit?
At any time he could've stepped in to help Bilbo destroy it if he did indeed confirm it was the One Ring. However, Gandalf would also have known how corrupting an influence the Ring can be. So he wouldn't have taken it himself, even if he had known earlier. No, it was much safer where it was in the Shire with Bilbo.
Presumably Fran Walsh, the screen writer, had the idea that, like the minions of Sauron, Smaug would sense the ring and be "drawn to it", almost like a ring wraith, or at least be aware of its nature at some level.

Could Smaug melt the one ring?
Smaug's dragon-fine would not have been hot enough to destroy the One Ring. The malevolence that Sauron put inside of the Ring could only be destroyed in the Cracks of Doom, so Frodo was compelled to make the journey to Mordor.
One thing that protects Bilbo from the corruption of the Ring is his compassion. After finding the One Ring in the goblin tunnels under Misty Mountain, Bilbo escapes by using the Ring to turn invisible. He sneaks past Gollum and the goblins guarding the tunnels, but he has a chance to kill Gollum on his way out.
But, in fact, when Frodo offers the Ring to Gandalf, the wizard pulls back sharply, refusing even to touch it. His explanation is candid and revealing. He says that his power makes him too susceptible, and that his great moral goodness could turn to equally great evil under the Ring's influence.
He would have done anything possible to avoid more battles, more destruction, more cruelty. Therefore, it was near impossible for the ring to be able to twist him into making a foolish mistake and revealing its existence, so it stayed hidden in Bilbo's pocket for the better part of those 60 years.
Not to mention, lightheartedness defined their culture as a whole. Those values served Bilbo and Frodo well when they had the One Ring -- because acquiring power wasn't part of their nature. That, however, didn't have anything to do with Hobbits as a race.
Inversely, the hobbits' good-naturedness and lack of ambition makes them less susceptible to the Ring's promises of power, as in Frodo and Samwise Gamgee, who are able to handle the Ring for extended periods of time.
In contrast, Bilbo only maintained possession of the ring for 60 years, and he was a lot more careful about its corrupting influence. As a result, Bilbo did not become a monster like Gollum. He did, however, offer viewers a flash of his monstrous potential when he saw the One Ring in Frodo's grasp.
Smaug is aware of the return of Sauron, and was apparently intent on joining forces with him (although there was some amount of confusion as to whether the dragon's motives for an alliance with Sauron were).
The whole reason why Gandalf got the dwarves and Bilbo on their mission to Erebor was because he feared an alliance between Sauron and Smaug. While it was unlikely that the dragon would serve Sauron, a collaboration was more than possible in Gandalf's mind (and his mind tended to be spot on).
Although Smaug was the greatest of the Dragons of his day, he seems not to have been the last of his kind as Gandalf told Frodo Baggins that "there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough [to melt the Rings of Power]", indicating the presence of other, lesser dragons.
The contents of Tolkiens' notes and other works weren't covered and were thus off-limits to the filmmakers. That's why Gandalf's mind coincidentally went blank — he legally couldn't name the wizards. So, the writers had Gandalf exploit a loophole by alluding to the two Istari without explicitly mentioning them.
Even if she took the One Ring and defeated Sauron, she would have eventually faded. Having seen the light of Valinor, she couldn't stay in Middle-earth indefinitely. During the events of The Lord of the Rings, Gollum is almost 600 years old. The One Ring has the power to extend the life of any mortal indefinitely. Gollum survived after losing the Ring because its effects on him lingered as long as the Ring existed in the world.
Other than Frodo, Sam was probably the best member of the Fellowship to bear the Ring. Yet, it was still too much to handle. Judging by the Ring's quick impact on him, it's unlikely Sam would've been able to destroy it. It really goes to show just how terrible a burden the One Ring was.
His friend and relative Sméagol, who had gone fishing with him, was immediately ensnared by the Ring's power and demanded that Déagol give it to him as a "birthday present"; when Déagol refused, Sméagol strangled him and took the Ring. It corrupted his body and mind, turning him into the monstrous Gollum.
In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Smaug is killed by Bard, an archer who lives in Laketown. After Bilbo angers Smaug, the dragon leaves his lair to attack Laketown. During his conversation with Smaug, Bilbo noticed that there was a hole in Smaug's armor.
Smaug could easily have cut through the armies of Mordor, and delayed the invasion of Middle-earth by years. So it wasn't in Sauron's interest to take on the dragon, but that doesn't mean he saw it as a lost cause, as he fully planned on creating an alliance.
