Leta Lestrange sacrifices herself in order to destroy the skull-hookah, which suggests that Grindelwald may rely on the skull in order to make prophecies. It does seem in keeping with Grindelwald's personality to collect powerful magical objects, like he does with the Elder Wand.
Leta ultimately showed courage and selflessness when she sacrificed her life to save the Scamander brothers from certain death, much like how her fellow Slytherin Severus Snape would likewise sacrifice his life for a good cause many years later.
In the movie, Leta believes that she caused the death of her half-brother Corvus Lestrange Jr. during a stormy Atlantic voyage to America, having swapped him for another infant in the compartment across the hall (Credence) before fleeing to safety as the boat sank.
Through flashbacks, we see that she was tormented by other kids because of being a Lestrange and became a troublemaker in response. She even feels like Dumbledore didn't like her. What is Bellatrix to Leta?
Leta actress Zoë Kravitz was quoted as saying she played Bellatrix's great-great-aunt. However, there's little evidence for that. Born as Bellatrix Black, Bellatrix married into the Lestrange family, meaning she and Leta aren't related by blood.
Leta's boggart was the form of her baby brother sinking (wrapped in a veil). It's shown in the film that when Leta is on a ship with her newborn brother and a woman(either her mother or a nanny), she was irritated of his crying and swapped him with another baby who was sleeping peacefully.
