Later, Snow and David use Maleficent's unborn offspring to transfer their own unborn child's darkness into it, before the Sorcerer's Apprentice banishes Maleficent's child through a portal to Earth, where it grows up to be a girl named Lily.
The Charmings then stole Maleficent's (Kristin Bauer Van Straten) dragon egg with the promise they would return it—but since nothing ever goes as planned on Once, the Apprentice banished the egg to the real world, much to the Charmings' chagrin, especially once they saw the egg housed a human baby and not a monster.
The couple, perceiving the child of a villain would likely be just as bad as her mother, agree to steal the egg so the Apprentice can cast the spell. While still in dragon form, Maleficent is startled awake by the couple's thievery, and after reverting to human form, she pleads for Snow White's mercy.

What happened to Maleficent's mother?
Maleficent was born in an enchanted forest kingdom known as the Moors, bordering the human kingdom. Her parents were killed by humans, leaving her as an orphan.
The irony is that Aurora was taken from her mother to protect her from Maleficent, but, to Aurora, Leila is simply the woman who gave birth to her while she refers to Maleficent as her Fairy Godmother.

Maleficent is based on the evil fairy godmother from Charles Perrault's fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. In Perrault's version, she's an evil, old fairy who was left out of the princess' christening because she hadn't left her tower in years, and most of the kingdom thought she was dead.
