There's no sympathy here, of course, with Dani's reaction to Christian's death being a big grin. She has reached catharsis by confronting her fear of loss, finding a new family to help her through the aftermath.
When her family died, Christian and his friends failed to fill in the gap. Dani was alone, isolated, and lacking any considerable empathy or compassion from those around her. By the film's end, she has embraced the values of this commune — values of community and found family — and finally feels seen, heard, and felt.
The point of the sadistic fiery sacrifice at the end of Midsommar, as the commune leaders explain, is to purge the Hårga of its evil. This is somewhat ironic because, from the outsiders' perspective, time-tested traditions like taking a sledgehammer to the skulls of the elderly are what make the Hårga evil.
Why was everyone screaming at the end of Midsommar?
Maja's love spell and Christian's ultimate betrayal finally let Dani break away from him. Instead of going off alone and swallowing her tears, as she had been doing the entire trip, she let the sadness consume her. The women of the cult replicated her cries to show that it was okay to fall apart.
This last scene can be interpreted in two ways: one, as Dani having completely lost her mind (smiling while her boyfriend is being burned alive), or Dani's realization that she has finally found a community that helps her carry her emotional burden — her Swedish friend who remembered her birthday, the women who wailed ...
A potentially traumatic event death of Dani's parents and sister drastically transforms Dani, leaving her psychologically traumatized. Later on, Dani develops posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder caused by this distressing event.
Rose then takes her own life in front of Joel, effectively passing the curse on to him. The Smile ending closes as the camera focuses on Rose's death being reflected in Joel's terrified eyes, showing that her fate will continue to happen to other people.
Bears in Swedish culture represent evil and dishonesty. Christian's evil and dishonesty throughout the film is punished by him literally taking on the skin of a bear, and being sent to Hell. This is a horror movie, but the way it looks is very non-traditional to the genre.
Despite seeming like he respects Christian and sees him as a friend, he is actually apathetic to his existence and it is later revealed that he was planning ways to separate Dani and Christian, given that he showed fellow Harga member Maja a picture of Christian to set them up.
It was an effect we were going for to further exacerbate the craziness that's going on. But more so than that, we used a lot of breathing effects. Ari and I wanted some way to hold everything down so we used Dani's breathing as a way to connect the audience with what is going on.
Connie Was Drowned As A Tribute To The Element Of Water
As she's wheeled into the building, her body is blue, wet, and covered in seaweed. It is obvious that Connie was drowned by the Hårga members and left in the water until they needed to use her for the appropriate ritual.
Death. When he tried to take a photo of the village's sacred text, he was bludgeoned to death and had his leg placed in a garden by a man (most likely Ulf), wearing a skin mask of Mark's face, who was killed after urinating on a sacred tree.
It is alluded that Pelle and Dani are destined to be together based on the fact that they are an astrological match. Not only is she the ideal person to become the Harga's queen, she is also the ideal mate for Pelle.
Once she saw Christian having sex with another woman in the Hårga cult's fertility ritual, Dani's sanity finally slipped away. That betrayal drove her to that state of disorientation on display as Christian meets his fiery end.
Ultimately, Dani becomes the May Queen she was always destined to become and sacrifices Christian to complete the mid-summer ritual. The most unexpected element in the film is not his death nor is it her being crowned the May Queen, it is actually how many times Aster overtly foreshadowed these events.
Midsommar, the movie, is partially based on the real midsummer festival celebrated in Sweden, but includes violent and pagan cult activities not found in the actual tradition.

Throughout Midsommar, it's clear that Pelle is attracted to Dani, and he's the only one who remembers Dani's birthday while in Sweden, with Christian forgetting about it, and even kisses Dani when she becomes the new May Queen.
Simon and Connie decide to leave, however several cultists find Simon and torture him. They then take out his lungs and use them to turn Simon into a blood eagle. They stuff flowers into Simon's eyes as well and leave him in the chicken shack.
Dani has just seen her boyfriend (Jack Reynor) having sex with another woman from the commune, and it causes all her pent-up rage and grief to come pouring out of her. The other women reflect her emotions back at her by screaming and crying as well.
In Midsommar, Dani Ardor (Florence Pugh) ingests hallucinogenic teas and is offered a full fish to swallow, while her boyfriend Christian (Josh Radnor) eats a pie with a pubic hair in it and drinks juice spiked with menstrual blood.

The grief monster rips off its skin, revealing its horrible, true form, then snaps open Rose's mouth, crawling inside of her.
