It is because of the Mayor's bullying, that caused the Grinch to become cold-hearted, unforgiving and diabolical. This is why he hated Christmas and the whos.
The Grinch tries to steal Christmas by sucking up all of the presents; stealing from people's homes; and eating all of the Christmas food throughout Whoville. The Grinch is seen laughing evilly. As the Grinch's heart grows, he is seen to stumble and scream out in pain.
Possible Explanation for the Grinch's Personality Transformation: The Whos provided the Grinch with a feeling of safety and acceptance that he had never known. His feeling of basic anxiety was alleviated, and as a result his need to use the self-protective mechanisms to defend against the anxiety was eliminated.
