In the morning, Dorothy and the Scarecrow notice a man made of tin who has been rusted in place for a year. After Dorothy rescues him by oiling his joints, the Tin Woodman asks to join the trip to the Emerald City, hoping the Great Oz will give him a heart.
"Then, if you don't mind, I'll go with you," said the Lion, "for my life is simply unbearable without a bit of courage." "You will be very welcome," answered Dorothy, "for you will help to keep away the other wild beasts.
Dorothy slaps him for trying to attack Toto and discovers that the Lion is a coward as he admits that he is not brave or king of the forest, but a cowardly lion. Dorothy feels sorry for the lion and tells him about the Wizard in the Emerald City and maybe he could give the lion some courage.
The Scarecrow is the first to join Dorothy on her journey. When Dorothy finds out that the Scarecrow does not have a brain, she eagerly suggests that the Scarecrow join her on her quest to meet the Wizard of Oz, in hopes that he might be able to help him get a brain, just as the Wizard will help her get home to Kansas.
The Tin Man wants a heart because he wants to be able to feel and experience emotions like a human being. He also wants to be able to love and care for others, which are important qualities that he believes will make him a better person.

What did the Tin Man wish for in Wizard of Oz?
On the long journey to the Emerald City, Dorothy and Toto are joined by the Scarecrow, who wishes he had brains; the Tin Woodman, who longs for a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage.
The Tin Woodman is reunited with his Munchkin sweetheart Nimmie Amee from the days when he was flesh and blood. This was a back-story from Baum's 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
"I think I'll miss you most of all," Dorothy whispered in the Scarecrow's ear. We shared her sentiment. The Cowardly Lion was funny, the Tin Woodman was dear, but the Scarecrow had soul. Oz wouldn't have been the same without him.
from Chapter 23 - Glinda The Good Witch Grants Dorothy's Wish. Glinda the Good stepped down from her ruby throne to give the little girl a good-bye kiss, and Dorothy thanked her for all the kindness she had shown to her friends and herself.
He uses deadly bubbles to melt enemies. Known for doing all these horrible things for Dorothy. The Tin Woodman has a romantic interest in Dorothy and follows all her orders without noticing that she doesn't care about him or his feelings for her.
The Good Witch of the North can't tell her how to do that, but she does give Dorothy a kiss of magical protection and a pair of silver shoes and sound advice. Then she sends Dorothy to ask the Wizard of Oz, who lives in the Emerald City, for directions home.
When he tries to bite Toto, Dorothy slaps him. She calls the Lion a coward and the Lion admits that he is. The Cowardly Lion joins her so that he can ask The Wizard for courage, ashamed that he is not brave enough to play his cultural role of the King of the Beasts.
The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion each have a “missing” characteristic that motivates them to travel with Dorothy to the Wizard of Oz- the Scarecrow wants a brain, the Tin Woodman wishes for a heart, and the Cowardly Lion yearns for courage.
Dorothy becomes very close friends with her companions, but she's not in love with anybody. The Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion are a full generation too old for her.
Then she kissed the Tin Woodman, who was weeping in a way most dangerous to his joints. But she hugged the soft, stuffed body of the Scarecrow in her arms instead of kissing his painted face, and found she was crying herself at this sorrowful parting from her loving comrades.
Dorothy says to the Scarecrow, I'll miss you most of all. But fortunately for you, I never get sick of talking about it. So let's do it again. In the early drafts of the Wizard of Oz script, there was an innocent romance between Dorothy and Honk, the counterpart of the Scarecrow in Kansas.
Dorothy's weaknesses include the fact that she is gullible and not too smart, but she doesn't let these things hold her back. Her strengths include always being kind to others and helping others no matter her problems.
To achieve the silver, metallic look, Buddy Ebsen, the original Tin Man, was painted with pure aluminum. Frequent lung ingestion of the aluminum sent Buddy Ebsen to the hospital after waking up one night with severe cramping in his hands, arms, and legs and difficulty breathing.
Greed is her primary motivation. The Witch is unsuccessful at stopping Dorothy from reaching the Wizard, but in a twist of fate the Wizard charges Dorothy with disposing of the Witch. Dorothy is captured by the Flying Monkeys as she tries to sneak into the Witch's castle.
The Wicked Witch of the West is very scary – she is green, ugly and very mean. She cackles and threatens to kill Dorothy. The trees in the forest have faces and talk. The forest is dark and creepy with screeching owls– Dorothy is afraid of meeting wild animals.
This is enough to please the Tin Woodman, who, with or without a heart, was all along the most tender and emotional of Dorothy's companions (just as the Scarecrow was the wisest and the Cowardly Lion the bravest).
