Katniss did everything she could to help heal it, but the wound was far too deep. It also didn't help that Peeta had camouflaged himself, so he would've put mud and germs inside of his leg. Peeta's leg was amputated by the Capitol since no one could do anything to save it, even with their advanced medical knowledge.
Peeta urges Katniss to run and stays to fight fellow tribute Cato while she escapes. He survives the encounter with Cato but suffers a stab wound on his leg. He camouflages himself into the rocks and mud alongside a riverbank, slowly dying of blood poisoning until Katniss finds him days later.

Apparently a more serious version of his leg injury made it to production but ended up on the cutting-room floor, according to the film's senior make-up artist Ve Neill. It's also noteworthy that losing the leg entirely was apparently never discussed as an option.

Was the hanging tree written for the Hunger Games?
As sourced in Suzanne Collins' prequel novel, Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) wrote “The Hanging Tree” inspired by historical events in District 12, which she and Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) both witnessed.
“The Hanging Tree” is mentioned periodically in the Mockingjay book as a song that was taught to Katniss by her father. But because of the song's haunting lyrics—(“Are you coming to the tree / Where they strung up a man they say murdered three”)—her parents banned her from singing it as a child.
What does he mean by this? It means that during the arena, during his killing spree, he realizes that there's more to life than killing, and he's just a pawn in the whole scheme of things. He realizes that he's a cruel person the capitol created, and he wouldn't mind dying because he wasn't alive on the inside anyways.
The only information the audience has about Katniss' future is that she and Peeta have a child together 15 years after their experiences in the Rebellion (at 33 years old) and that five years later, they have a second child.
Peeta used the dyes to paint a picture of Rue after Katniss covered her with flowers when she died. He says he wants to hold them accountable for killing Rue, and Effie tells him that that kind of thinking is forbidden. Katniss then tells the team she hung a dummy of Seneca Crane.

Why does Haymitch tell Peeta to let the bruise on his jaw show?
He keeps Peeta from putting ice on his jaw, telling him that the bruise will make others think that he got into a fight with another tribute before the Games, something that is against the rules. Haymitch makes a deal with them, promising that he will remain sober enough to help them.
