In a fight to the death, Luke's level head would have prevailed over Kylo's uncontrollable rage, and the master would have been able to kill his apprentice. That notwithstanding, using the Force projection was the right move for Luke because if he had killed his nephew, Ben Solo would never have been redeemed.

The reason why killing Han did not work is because Han was willing to sacrifice himself in an attempt to reach out to his son. His love for Ben Solo overpowered his fear of being murdered by Kylo Ren, which essentially tainted the dark side act.
Kylo lost to Rey in TFA because he was heavily wounded and was holding back against her due to Snoke's request that he bring her back to him alive. He is also stated by Palpatine in the Secrets of the Sith book to be “equally as powerful as a real Sith despite not being one”.
The effort killed her, but she was successful nonetheless, and her son and her student worked together to destroy the Emperor. Leia succeeded where Luke had failed, proving she was a better Jedi Master in the Star Wars saga.
Although Rey is also strong with force, she doesn't compare to Anakin's pure strength with the force and his connection, being created by the Force itself. Even in the movies, comics, and shows we see Anakin accomplish greater feats of strength that Rey was years away from learning.

This isn't a fight, this is a curb-stomp. Kylo would absolutely never decline a fight with Darth Vader, a force of legendary power whose surpassing will certianly gain him a place among the most powerful of the Dark Side, but he is clearly outmatched in power.
Kylo Ren is not weak, his potential is certainly as high as any of the Skywalker lineage, but I believe he simply has a misunderstanding of how the Force works, and because of this misunderstanding, he has made himself weaker.

Kylo Ren's "unstable" lightsaber was designed to kill. Knowing Makashi, he would become a much more dangerous foe as he could disarm and eliminate his opponents far quicker without the need to endure a long, intense fight. Sadly, he didn't learn Form II as there was no one around to teach him during his younger days.
