Possibly drunk from the day in the city, Daisy carelessly strikes Myrtle with Gatsby's car. She then negligently speeds off from the scene of the accident without stopping. She is only thinking about herself rather than the woman she struck.
Hundreds of people eagerly indulged in Gatsby's parties and wealth, but they can't be bothered to come to his funeral. Even those who seemed to know Gatsby fairly well, like Klipspringer and Wolfsheim, won't come to honor him. Klipspringer is more concerned about his tennis shoes than with Gatsby's death.

Throughout the story we do see evidence that Gatsby really is in love with Daisy. “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald). This suggests that Gatsby wants to be closer to Daisy so that he can watch over her and protect her from any form of harm.
Tom realises that it was Gatsby's car that struck and killed Myrtle. Back at Daisy and Tom's home, Gatsby tells Nick that Daisy was driving the car that killed Myrtle but he will take the blame.
