The MCU's Echo can call on the strengths and skills of her ancestors to grant her certain skills and abilities. Echo's new powers could pave the way for greater prominence of Native American culture in Marvel Comics. If her new powers are translated to comics, Echo could become one of Marvel's most powerful heroes.
Echo can duplicate any physical action that she sees, ranging from musical performance and ballet to martial arts and weapon usage. She's able to mimic the fighting styles of others much stronger than herself. She's a highly talented pianist, music composer, artist, ballet dancer, boxer, martial artist, and markswoman.
How Maya Lopez, a.k.a. Echo, Got Her Powers in Marvel Comics. In the comics, Echo has photographic reflexes and the ability to copy any movement after observing it. This stems from the fact that she is Deaf, and has thus depended on observation to navigate hearing society.
Due to the favored battle conditions, Namor overpowered Echo and left her for dead in the ocean floor. The Phoenix was drawn to Maya's suffering, as well as her ability to adapt and wield its power in different ways. It resurrected Echo and chose her as its host.
Marvel Studios' Echo is set after the events of 2021's Hawkeye, in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) exacted her revenge on Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), thereby putting herself in grave danger.
All told, Echo is fine. I enjoyed the first three episodes well enough, even if it's a bit slow for a show that's only five episodes long. All five episodes drop tonight, which also feels like a bad decision, not giving the series enough time to build up any hype.
The only real standout being Vincent D'Onofrio's excellent portrayal of Kingpin, but even that is tarnished by the writing and a limp wiltering flower of an ending. Echo also suffered from bad editing with the pacing and storyline feeling like they were all over the place.
Maya Lopez is the adopted daughter of the supervillain Kingpin. She is also a supporting character of the superhero Matt Murdock / Daredevil. The character has been a member of the Avengers and the New Avengers at various points in her history.
To everyone's surprise, Fongji Wu is able to face down the Phoenix Force and absorb it whilst remaining in full control, becoming the firebird's new host. If she can handle the power of the Phoenix Force, she most certainly has a chance to defeat it.
Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book III, relates that Echo offended the goddess Hera by keeping her in conversation, thus preventing her from spying on one of Zeus' amours. To punish Echo, Hera deprived her of speech, except for the ability to repeat the last words of another.
The daughter of a member of the Tracksuit Mafia, she lost her hearing as a child. Without the money to enroll in a school for the Deaf, Maya was forced to develop her ability to lipread in order to interact with the hearing world that wouldn't accommodate her.
Zeus, King of the Greek Olympian gods, noted Echo's chatty personality, and began hatching a plan to use it to his own advantage. He persuaded Echo to keep his wife Hera, goddess of women, marriage, family and childbirth, busy with long stories, conversation, and flattery.
They are not changing Echo's powers in her series because the director dislikes her comics powers. They are doing it in order to connect them to her Native American roots and create a more unique narrative and backstory.
Maya Lopez is a deaf member of the Choctaw tribe who moved out of her hometown as a child with her father William Lopez, and became the protegée of Wilson Fisk, growing up under his care. Losing her father due to Ronin's hunt for criminals, Lopez became the Tracksuit Mafia's commander, vowing revenge on Ronin.
What's the difference between Echo and Taskmaster?
At first, it might seem that Taskmaster has the edge in a fight against Echo, despite their similar powers. Taskmaster has a much wider range of fighting styles, after all, and has considerably more experience in superhuman combat. However, when fighting an opponent like Echo, experience doesn't necessarily matter.
What is stronger, Odinforce or Phoenix Force? The Phoenix Force is stronger — by a good margin. Here is the Phoenix Force threatening to destroy Asgard if Odin dared contact it again.
With the Phoenix Force, Jean Grey is an Omega level mutant, meaning there is simply no limit to what she can accomplish, and though the Scarlet Witch would certainly put up a strong, mind-bending fight, Jean Grey would likely take the victory during this huge battle.
If Thanos does not possess any of the Stones, the Phoenix Force would be too much for him to battle against. Despite his experience, his weapons, his tactics, his willpower or even his armies, the Phoenix can wipe through all of this because of the raw power that is at her disposal.
(**) In the comics, she's called Echo because she has the ability to literally copy the movements and actions of any non-superhuman. Had the MCU version stuck with this, she could fight as well as Shang-Chi, shoot arrows as well as both Hawkeyes, etc.
Echo concludes with a showdown between Maya and her surrogate father, Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), and instead of avenging her biological father's (Zahn McClarnon) murder, she used her powers to access the treacherous crime lord's mind in hopes of healing the childhood trauma that made him who he is today ...
Echo is as much a series about Maya's relationship with Fisk as it is about her time reconnecting with her family in Oklahoma and her Choctaw heritage, but the show would have benefited from an even greater focus on the latter.
Now, both Daredevil and Kingpin appear in Echo. All these cameos have made Echo and the rest of the MCU's recent slate of television feel less an extension of its movie empire than a constant reminder of an old Netflix show.
In fact, some fans took to the internet ahead of its premiere to describe the live-action version of Echo as “woke” and criticized Maya's disabled Indigenous deaf character as prioritizing an agenda over storytelling or meaningfully expanding the Marvel universe.
