Before heading into the arena, Katniss is required to display her skills for potential investors. Frustrated that they will not pay attention to her, she impulsively shoots an apple from the mouth of a roasted pig in the investor's suite.
Why did Katniss shoot an arrow at the apple in the pig's mouth?
Furious that they're paying more attention to a dead pig than a teenager with her life on the line, she shoots an apple directly out of the swine's mouth – it's an "I'm not gonna be ignored, Dan" moment if there ever was one.
Katniss aims for a hanging bag of apples, and with her third arrow gets them to tumble free, setting off a chain of explosions that destroys most of the Careers' supplies and sends her flying backward.

Katniss and Peeta were the first and only tributes to receive a 12. During the 71st Hunger Games, Johanna Mason kept up a guise of weakness, so she presumably got a low score on purpose. "A few years" before the 74th Hunger Games, an unknown male victor only received a score of three.
The Cornucopia Bloodbath scene at the start of the hunger games is very intense and quite disturbing. We see children brutally murdered by other kids, although the camera is shaky, making the gore hard to focus on. We see spearing and stabbings and blood splashing out as well as a brief leg amputation.
Katniss is a girl's name of Greek origin. It means "aquatic plant," which is fitting for your little water baby, who's bound to bloom and blossom like a beautiful plant.
Presently, those aspects of her life form her identity. She decides she doesn't ever want to have kids because even though she would be a victor, her children wouldn't be exempt from the reapings.
When Peeta talks about how he hopes someone else will kill Thresh, Katniss starts to cry because she doesn't want anyone else to die, which is unacceptable from a tribute in the Hunger Games. Instead, she disguises her tears as homesickness.
Katniss comes close to crying, something she knows she mustn't do because it would indicate weakness to the other tributes and make her look vulnerable; thankfully, Haymitch distracts the crowd and the cameras by stumbling off stage.
What happens as a result of Katniss shooting the arrow through the pig's apple?
Katniss loses her temper as a roast pig is brought in for the judges and shoots the apple inside the pig's mouth, startling them and finally getting their attention. When the scores for private sessions are released, Katniss has earned the highest numbers of any contestant.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
l Peeta did it so that the citizens of the Capitol would be unhappy with President Snow/the Gamemakers. Because of course they would be outraged if they were going to kill one of their favourite victors AND her unborn child.
It's only implied that they get it on via snuggling and other affectionate acts in close quarters — but if you have read the book, they really imply that they took their relationship to the next level.
Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
Primrose "Prim" Everdeen is Katniss' younger sister. She is 12 years old in The Hunger Games, and has blonde hair and blue eyes. Kind and compassionate, Prim is a skilled healer, a pupil of her mother. In Mockingjay, Prim is chosen by District 13 to train as a doctor.
In the book (which is told from Coriolanus's point-of-view), during his final chat with Dr Gaul, Coriolanus is told that all recordings of the 10th Hunger Games have been deleted. It was wiped from the record as it led to the deaths of some of the mentors, potentially making the Capitol look weak.
The 100th Hunger were the 5th Quinquennial Quell and were held in an arena known as "The American Nightmare" and lasted for 3 days. The main events were rotating weather. This year's victor was Tritica MacDonald, aged 17, from District 9.
With the last killing occuring before an hour had even passed, these games shocked the Capitol audience and are the quickest in the history of the games.
