Ice King in turn gradually became less evil as those around him became understanding of his struggles. His relationship with Princess Bubblegum also becomes less antagonistic, despite his repeated attempts to kidnap her in the beginning of the series.
It seems that he also captures her more than any other princess and enjoys being near her. In "Mortal Folly," he even tries to get her attention and marry her and even tells her that he loves her. However, after she temporarily turns thirteen, he is not interested in her.
TLDR Ice King's evil nature and want to kidnap princesses stems from his evil heart that smooth talks with girls and the reason why he's so awkward and sad lately is because he no longer has Ricardio.
His beard is apparently animated, operating much like a limb with partial shape-changing abilities, which he can wield in close combat. His beard also forms tiny wings that allow him to fly, although he must have both his beard and crown to fly.

Ice King has a strange fascination with Bubblegum and she is often the target of his kidnapping schemes and romantic advances; it is revealed that she reminds him of his fiancée Betty, whom he often referred to as his "princess." Bubblegum is frequently seen in the company of her close companion, Lady Rainicorn.
The lyrics to "Remember You" were taken from letters written by Simon Petrikov to Marceline, explaining why he does not remember her, and that he needed the crown to stay alive even though it was making him insane.
7. Finn & Flame Princess. Phoebe, a.k.a. Flame Princess, is Finn's first real flame after his long-lasting unrequited crush on Princess Bubblegum. For a while, they go out and have fun together, and their relationship is the epitome of young love.
Centuries before the beginning of the series and some time after the foundation of the Candy Kingdom, Princess Bubblegum met and befriended Marceline the Vampire Queen, eventually entering into a romantic relationship with her.
Finn was, for a long time, the only confirmed human in the Land of Ooo, to the point where he had an epithet, "The Human", and was referred to by many as "Finn the Human". The reason for this is revealed in the episode "Her Parents," as Lady Rainicorn's dad believed that humans were extinct.
Peppermint Butler is generally portrayed as a happy, even-tempered, and carefree person, as shown by his interactions with the Candy People in "Slumber Party Panic." She finally admits to liking the Ice King, but only as a father-figure, as she stopped the Ice King from kissing her when he mistakes it for flirting and says she doesn't like him "that way." She is also visibly distraught when she realizes that he doesn't remember the meaning of the messages he left for her from ...
Ice King stops it and announces to the heroes that he is going to get married, for that is the reason he came, not to fight. Finn and Jake are shocked and Ice King shows them his bride, Old Lady Princess, who is in a wagon with other penguins.
Marceline, Simon's adoptive daughter, had a hard time accepting the changes in him. His forgetfulness and madness hurt her more than she cared to admit. But as much as Marceline resented the Ice King, she could never thoroughly hate him, for he was still Simon, lost beneath the madness.
Before he reached the state he is currently in as "Ice King", every time Simon wore the crown, his hair and beard would suddenly grow longer, and his nose would grow long and pointed. However, when he removed the crown, his hair, beard, and nose would revert back to their normal lengths.
Later seasons unveil his tragic backstory, revealing he was once a good human named Simon Petrikov who lost his mind, memories and loved ones due to the magic crown giving him his ice powers which was seen in the episode "Holly Jolly Secrets".
Finn seeing Ice King as Simon suggests that Finn feels empathy for what happened to Simon. Additionally, he comments that it's "kind of hard not to" see Simon in Ice King.
The crown erased his memory and influenced and twisted his mind and body to a point where he quite literally lost his humanity and started being considered a twisted wizard called Ice King.
She and Simon were in a committed relationship until Simon obtained a cursed crown. In the series finale, "Come Along With Me," Betty is consumed by GOLB with Ice King and Finn. She and Simon are reverted to their original human forms from the deity's "digestive" process.
Because protecting Simon is her truest wish, the crown takes effect and Betty fuses into a singular entity with GOLB, sacrificing herself to save Ooo. She exits the planet through a portal, leaving the crown behind. Marceline comforts Simon as he mourns her. Before the portal closes, the Ice Crown falls to the ground.
