Because of the storm, Katniss and her district partner Peeta Mellark do not hear the cannon signaling Thresh's death and only find out he is dead when his portrait appears in the sky. Katniss is distressed at Thresh's death, as she had liked him and hoped he would defeat Cato. Thresh placed fifth out of 24 tributes.
He feels as if he owes Katniss for her kindness toward Rue and, indirectly, his district, and Katniss of all people understands not wanting to owe anyone. This is another instance of opposing districts cooperating, something that the Capitol discourages and that doesn't often happen during the Games.
Katniss has just learned that Peeta has romantic feelings for her, and initially she feels she is being used. She becomes angry with Peeta as a result, going so far as to shove him over an urn of flowers.
Katniss and Peta only learn of Thresh's death when his picture is projected in the sky. However, in Mockingjay, the third book of the trilogy, Katniss reveals that Thresh died in a battle with Cato, one of the Career Tributes.
He also gave Katniss a chance to run free instead of killing her as a peace offering for protecting Rue. Cause of Death: Once he avenged Rue, Thresh was killed off-screen by a pack of wolf-like mutts designed by Gamemakers to hurry along the end of the games.
Effie Trinket does not die in Mockingjay. She is released along with the Capitol's other political prisoners when President Snow is removed from power. She helps Katniss prepare for Snow's execution, filling the role of Cinna, while lacking his deep empathy for Katniss.
Katniss feels betrayed, most of all by Haymitch, who used her and Peeta. Eventually she wakes to find Gale there. He's badly injured and tells her the Capitol bombed District 12 after the Games. He got Prim and Katniss's mother out in time, but the District 12 is gone.
Gale was helping the team by putting in suggestions and helped also by defense and offense in the attack on the capitol. He designed a bomb that set off near/in the hospital where Prim was working. Prim does die in this scene, along with many patients.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
Katniss is sad that he's dead and struggles to hide her pain. She sleeps with her hood over her face to hide it from the cameras so that she can say goodbye to Thresh and thank him. She promises to remember him and help his and Rue's family if she wins.
What does he mean by this? It means that during the arena, during his killing spree, he realizes that there's more to life than killing, and he's just a pawn in the whole scheme of things. He realizes that he's a cruel person the capitol created, and he wouldn't mind dying because he wasn't alive on the inside anyways.
In the 74th Hunger Games, Clove was the only Career tribute who came close to killing Katniss twice — at the Bloodbath and at the Feast, and certainly seemed to have a deep hatred for her, perhaps because Katniss received a higher score than her.

Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.

As an eager mouthpiece for The Capitol, his fate remains unknown following the successful revolution at the conclusion of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. Presumably, he's executed alongside the other former elites, but a definitive answer remains unknown.
