One aspect of the Star Wars sequel trilogy that many fans couldn't get behind was the fact that Luke Skywalker, the man chosen by destiny to becomes the greatest Jedi who ever lived, tried to kill his nephew and padawan Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren just because he sensed Dark Side energy within him.

Why is Kylo Ren so obsessed with Rey?
He saw her as a useful tool for his rise to power. He was intrigued by the mystery surrounding her. He wanted closure for his defeat at her hands. He had a genuine emotional connection to her.
I suggest that when Ren's emotional outbursts, impulsivity, and unstable self-concept are looked at more closely, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that he suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder and that perhaps he is simply not just a cold-hearted villain after all.

Luke sensed that Ben was strong with the dark side, and he couldn't risk another 'Vader' or 'Palpatine' rising up in the galaxy after so recently extinguishing the Sith from the cosmos.
Ben was corrupted by both Snoke and Palpatine to fall to the dark side since his childhood, with them planting seeds of doubt on the boy's mind about the Jedi and his family.
