However, it is later revealed that Loki was often jealous of Thor even back then, and resented being left in his "shadow".
Loki has changed role and aspect many times, but he is still mostly remembered as Thor's antithesis, his resentful adoptive brother who grew up to hate the God of Thunder. One of the reasons for Loki's bitterness is that Odin always favored his "real" son, Thor, during their childhood.
Loki's villain origins in the MCU stem from his discovery that he is actually the son of a Frost Giant, which led him to believe that Odin favored Thor over him, causing him to turn against his family and become a villain.

Steve Rogers is one of the few mortals able to not only lift Mjolnir, but wield its full power, making him someone who legitimately could defeat Thor. Assuming the reason for their battle is due to Thor being deceived, possessed, or otherwise out of his mind, Cap would be able to use Mjolnir against him.

Following this final stanza a prose section details that after Loki left the hall, he disguised himself as a salmon and hid in the waterfall of Franangrsfors, where the Æsir caught him.
This caused Thor to send lightning towards them, toppling the mine on top of them. Loki apologized and confessed, saying he only thought of the challenge to get the Cup and gain as much respect as Thor. His brother forgave him and found a way out of the mine.
While Loki and Thor did, by heart, truly love each other as brothers, their intention to rule Asgard made them fierce rivals. However, Thor evolved himself by learning that a true leader doesn't start wars or seek to conquer other territories, while Loki sought to control the world and gain more power over others.
The spell was permanent, making it so Loki only reverted to having blue skin when touching a Frost Giant or one of their artifacts. Since Loki's appearance was a spell, not just an illusion, it could not be broken or reversed by Odin's death.
This pushed Loki to sabotage his coronation, and the discovery that he was adopted all along made Loki go mad. Meanwhile, Thor never knew Loki's true motives until the end of the movie, and once he did, he was more angered by his actions and failed to see why Loki had seemingly broken bad overnight.
