Peeta is a much better fit for Katniss in so many ways. Through The Hunger Games, He is patient, empathetic and selfless in a way that Gale isn't. Peeta understands that Katniss is not in a position where she can make a definitive decision about whether she wants to be with him or Gale.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
Peeta is one of the most wholesome characters in The Hunger Games. He is always on the side of peace. Even when his life was on the line, he preferred to sacrifice himself to save Katniss's life. Though his strength is often unmatched, Peeta isn't a fighter, in fact, he always tries to be forgiving and understanding.
Peeta is repeatedly described as charming, generous, kind and likable, and possessing a self-deprecating sense of humour. He first confuses and later inspires Katniss with his determination to maintain his identity while inside the arena and his refusal to become a "piece" in the Capitol's game.
Still, we learn from Katniss that in her eyes Peeta symbolizes hope. He is, after all, the one who helped save her family from starvation by giving her loaves of bread when she was a child (2.48). Peeta's kindness probably saved the lives of Katniss and her family.

Why is Peeta a hero?
Peeta is very strong, and there is a sort of purity to him that wouldn't have helped him survive the Games on his own because he refuses to play on their terms. And as Haymitch and Katniss clearly note, no one decent ever wins the Games. But Peeta does, because of Katniss, going on to prove this even more.
There was a plan to break them out of the arena once Snow announced the Quell. The victor tributes from 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 all had knowledge of the plan, which explains why it seemed everyone was working to protect her and Peeta.
No one on earth could endure the torture that Peeta went through without being horrifically traumatized, but the fact that he was so forthright about his love for Katniss didn't do him any favors in that department either.
Later, Katniss sang for their music class, and Peeta realized he was in love with her when he saw that the birds were listening like they did for her father. He said that he had often watched her, but the two never spoke until the reaping.
we know he was injected with the tracker jacker serum and conditioned to fear katniss. under the influence of the serum, he was shown footage of her and probably the bombings in district 12 too, so he'd associate her with all these horrible things and believe she's the cause of them.
Many people naturally liked him and felt they could align with him, and Peeta was able to use his natural kindness and charisma to make it through the Games, such as with the Careers and later in the Quarter Quell.

By then, they had gone through two games together. To Katniss, there was no one other than Peeta who could truly understand her nightmares and could protect her and soothe her. Losing Peeta made her see what she had failed to see.
Peeta is said to be good looking, he is much more friendly and sweet than katniss, his family is much less poverty than average folk in district 12. the one who catch Peeta's eye would be one of the most lucky girl in the district.
Gale is jealous of Peeta and the relationship he has with Katniss, and he wants Katniss to decide between them, though he doesn't press Katniss during her recovery in District 13. Gale is an excellent hunter and excels at setting snares and traps.
When Katniss comes home to District 12, Gale immediately confesses his love for Katniss, and she realizes she might have feelings for him, too — but she can't explore them, because she has to continue her fake relationship with Peeta or else her entire family, including “cousin Gale,” will be killed.
The woods are now ruined. Katniss decides that the Capitol views her and Gale's weekly hunting trips — and the one time that Gale unexpectedly kissed her, which Snow knows about — as flaunting her defiance in front of the entire district.

It's only implied that they get it on via snuggling and other affectionate acts in close quarters — but if you have read the book, they really imply that they took their relationship to the next level.
Johanna clarifies, stating that Peeta has turned into his evil mutt identity given the way he verbally attacks Finnick and Katniss. Gale even sees a bit of himself in how Peeta acts and speaks.
Gale is neither truly friends nor enemies with Peeta Mellark though he has felt jealous of Peeta due to the show that Peeta and Katniss put on for the cameras. In Catching Fire, Peeta knew Katniss had feelings for him and fully accepted that he would allow Katniss to be with Gale if it meant her happiness.
Why so evil, Peeta? Well, as we learn at the beginning of Mockingjay (spoilers, obv), he's been brainwashed by a method called “hijacking,” in which Tracker Jacker venom is injected to create hallucinations. In this particular case, he's been brainwashed to hate Katniss.
Chia Mags kisses Finnick on the mouth to briefly let him know that this is the last time she will see him. It's her way of saying "Goodbye" but in a more affectionate way.
Given that she is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Peeta, it's safe to assume that the Morphling was committed to the rebel cause. Like the other victors, she knows the power that Katniss has as a lightning rod for the rebellion, and she knows that Katniss will not help without Peeta.
Snow can't stand to see a young woman betray a young man's affection—his view of what happened 65 years ago. And so he takes out his old, festering wound on Katniss.
