The film follows a highly fictionalized version of San Te, a legendary Shaolin martial arts disciple who trained under the general Chi Shan. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is widely considered to be one of the greatest kung fu films and a turning point in its director's and star's careers.
When the Manchu government brutally crushes a local uprising, a student rebel (Gordon Liu) escapes the carnage and finds refuge in the Shaolin temple. Determined to seek revenge, he undertakes the rigorous program of training in the temple's 35 chambers, emerging years later as a kung-fu master.
Currently, there are more than forty overseas cultural institutions established by the temple's leadership and its disciples in dozens of countries around the world. Shaolin monks come to the centers to teach Buddhist classics, martial arts, meditation, etc.

The most important part of becoming a monk is gaining acceptance into a training program at a temple. If you can meet up to the rigorous requirements of the program, you'll eventually be graduated as a Shaolin Monk.
For living and training at the Temple, official permits from the Temple and Government are required. It means that the Temple and the masters are always responsible for students' and disciples' health and safety.
