Regardless, based on the season 7 of The Clone Wars, and the fact that Darth Maul was aware of Anakin Skywalker's future and his role as the Chosen One, it is very likely that Darth Maul indeed feared Darth Vader to some extent, and preferred to avoid a direct confrontation with him, at least, on his own.
During the Invasion of Naboo at the climax of The Phantom Menace, Maul first kills Qui-Gon Jinn, then is defeated when Obi-Wan Kenobi bisects him with a shockingly non-fatal blow.
He had killed his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, for which Obi-Wan got his revenge by slicing the Sith in half. But after Maul took yet another person away from him, Obi-Wan absolutely hated Maul. The Jedi Master almost let his rage and anger get the best of him, growing close to the dark side before he rejected it.
Finally, Darth Maul himself admitted he wasn't capable of facing Vader alone in Star Wars Rebels. And while the story in question is no longer part of the official Star Wars canon, Darth Vader fought and defeated Maul in comic Star Wars Tales #9.

After tracking Kenobi to Tatooine, Maul engaged him in a brief Lightsaber duel, which resulted in Maul's demise. Before dying, Maul was comforted with the knowledge that Kenobi was protecting the Chosen One, finding some peace in the idea that the end of the Sith was at hand and that he would be avenged.
The Chosen One is said to be the one that will destroy the Sith, so if the prophecy comes true (which it does, as we know from ROTJ), then they will be avenged. Maul may have also meant the other fallen victims of the Sith, like his brother Savage.
Is Darth Maul Still Alive After The Phantom Menace?
Though he killed Jinn, Maul was, in turn, defeated by Kenobi, who bisected the Sith assassin at the waist. Darth Maul was believed to be dead in the aftermath of the battle but ultimately survived, emerging a decade after his defeat, during the height of the Clone Wars.
It's already been shown in the source material… more than once… that Darth Maul is not on Darth Sidious's level. Every time he dueled Sidious as his apprentice (in Legends) he got easily defeated. In the show Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Palpatine takes on Darth Maul and Savage Opress simultaneously.
Not only was Obi-Wan tired toward the end of the battle, but Qui-Gon was as well. When Qui-Gon and Maul are separated by a force field, Qui-Gon kneels and rests for a moment—gathering what little strength he had left to try and finish off Maul.
Darth Maul was a greater, stronger and younger swordsman than Qui-Gon Jinn, and more powerful. Darth Maul knew that, Darth Sidious knew that, and for that matter, at the time of their first clash on Tatooine, Jinn himself understood that.
During Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul had no clue about Anakin and dismissed him as a child following the Jedi around. But with Maul's return during the Clone Wars, he likely found out about Anakin through his obsession with Obi-Wan.
In a non-canon story from the pages of Star Wars Tales #9, Darth Maul was resurrected to fight Darth Vader to the death. Ultimately, Darth Vader was named the victor for a pitch-black reason: He hates himself more. In the main Star Wars canon, Darth Vader and Darth Maul never met, let alone fought.
Like his master, Darth Sidious, better known as Sheev Palpatine, Maul's main weakness was his overconfidence. In Luke Skywalker's confrontation with Palpatine during The Return of the Jedi, he tells the Emperor that his overconfidence is his weakness.
Dooku despises Maul for being a threat to him, and for killing his beloved padawan Qui-Gon, and Maul hated Dooku for being his replacement. They also didn't regard each other as a true Sith: Dooku saw Maul as nothing more than a trained animal and Maul saw Dooku as a Sith pretender.
Of the three, Darth Vader was Palpatine's favorite "son." Indeed, once Anakin arrived on the scene, both Maul and Dooku became irrelevant to Palpatine's ultimate long-range goals.
