G — General Audiences.All Ages Admitted. A G-rated motion picture contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that, in the view of the Rating Board, would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture.
Rated G: General audiences – All ages admitted. Rated PG: Parental guidance suggested – Some material may not be suitable for children. Rated PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned – Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. Rated R: Restricted – Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

This was especially true for films made before the PG-13 rating was introduced in 1984. What does U mean? The U symbol stands for Universal. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. However, it is impossible to predict what might upset a particular child, especially at this lower end of the category range.
TV-G. Most parents will find this program suitable for all ages. Programs are generally suitable for all audiences, though they may not necessarily contain content of interest to children.
Once the standard classification for romcoms, sci-fi, westerns and action flicks from the 1970s to the late '90s, the G-rating has fallen out of favour as films have become more explicit and violent over the past 20 years.
Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language.
Air is rated R by the MPAA for language throughout. Violence: An angry man threatens to bite off someone's genitals: this is not a serious threat but is part of an argument. Sexual Content: There is a brief glimpse of a nude male statue with visible genitals.
A TV-Y rating means that programming is appropriate for children of all ages. TV-Y7 indicates that programming is designed for chil- dren ages 7 and older. An additional rating, TV-Y7-FV, is used to indicate that a program contains “fantasy violence” that may be more intense or combative than other TV-Y7 programs.
G-rated movies may appear to be relatively rare compared to other ratings like PG or PG-13, but there are still many G-rated movies that are produced each year. The number of G-rated movies may vary from year to year depending on the trends in the film industry and the types of movies that are being produced.
Parents need to know that Up is the second Pixar movie (after The Incredibles) to receive a PG rating, mostly due to a few potentially frightening scenes involving a band of trained talking dogs trying to get rid of the protagonists, some moments where characters almost fall from a floating house, and some guns firing.

TV-Y7-FV (Directed to Older Children - Fantasy Violence) - Programs where fantasy violence may be more intense or more combative than other programs in this category will be designated TV-Y7-FV. Equivalent to soft PG for movies and soft E10+ for video games.
Programming rated TV-MA in the United States by the TV Parental Guidelines signifies content for mature audiences. It corresponds to the MPA's R rating for movies, and the ESRB's M rating for video games. Programs with this rating are generally not suitable for people or individuals under 17 (some sources may say 18).
TV-MA Mature Audience Only This program is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17. This program contains one or more of the following: graphic violence (V), explicit sexual activity (S), or crude indecent language (L).
