In the aftermath of killing Coin, Katniss tries to take her nightlock pill but Peeta stops her, a parallel and inversion of their attempted “suicide” in the first book.
During the Second Rebellion, soldiers from District 13, including Katniss herself, were given specifically formulated poison capsules to swallow in the event they were captured. Dubbed "nightlock", they were known to have the same effect as the berries themselves.
Instead of battling against Peeta, however, Katniss pulled out the nightlock berries, which she and Peeta threatened to consume and leave the games with no victor at all. Before they could swallow them, Claudius Templesmith took back the change, and both were announced as victors of the 74th Hunger Games.
Snow laughs after Katniss killed Coin because he enjoys the irony of the situation. He avoided the official execution ceremony, even though Panem's citizens still take their revenge on him, while Katniss ends up snatching away the victory and power that Coin thinks she has successfully secured.
Peeta knocking the nightlock pill from Katniss's hand didn't stop her from wanting to die. While in captivity, Katniss refused to eat and had grown extremely thin. The days dragged on and became weeks.

Why didn t Katniss take the Nightlock pill?
Peeta continues to protect Katniss, preventing her from taking her nightlock pill. Gale fails to shoot Katniss as the guards take her away, just as Katniss failed to shoot him earlier in the novel as he was being captured by the Peacekeepers. In the end, neither Peeta nor Gale is able to kill Katniss.
Why did Peeta stop Katniss from taking the Nightlock pill?
3) He stops her taking the nightlock pill after she kills Coin. He knew her well enough to know that not only would she try to kill Coin but that she would then try to kill herself straight after with the nightlock pill.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
Coin killed Prim to destroy Katniss because, as Boggs (Mahershala Ali) explains before his death, Katniss is her biggest threat to maintaining her power over Panem because of the influence Katniss has over the people. Katniss only ever tolerated Coin, making her dangerous.
Did Gale mean to kill Prim? No, Gale did not mean to kill prim but he still designed the bomb. But, although he holds a small fraction of responsibility, he never meant for Prim to get hurt.
The film included an additional scene during the earlier training sequence where Foxface successfully identified various plants and berries. This suggests she could have known the berries were poisonous; her choice to eat them regardless is often theorized as having been an intentional act of suicide.
Another important wild plant to The Hunger Games is nightlock—a fictional plant with deadly dark berries whose name is likely derived from a combination of nightshade and poisonous hemlock.
NightlockNightlock, the poison of the forest, doesn't actually exist, but its name is most likely derived from two living plants with similar toxicity: deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), and poison hemlock (Conium maculatum).
Notably, she is responsible for feeding her family, which she does by hunting and foraging, skills she learned from her father before his death in a mine explosion years earlier. Hunting, however, is illegal and punishable by death. Katniss does it anyway, indicating a rebellious streak in her.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Katniss tries to take her nightlock pill, but Peeta stops her and the pill is lost in the struggle. Katniss is bound, blindfolded, and locked in a room. For two days, she refuses food and sleep, only singing to pass the time. Haymitch comes to tell Katniss her trial is over.
While Prim is caring for the wounded, a second set of bombs go off, killing her, along with everyone around her. This act of treachery and shameless targeting of the innocent is what finally turns President Snow's guards against him. They believe he is to blame, when in reality, Alma Coin was responsible.
Given that she is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Peeta, it's safe to assume that the Morphling was committed to the rebel cause. Like the other victors, she knows the power that Katniss has as a lightning rod for the rebellion, and she knows that Katniss will not help without Peeta.
It became clear then that Coin had the same mentality as Snow. To her, children were a tool to be used against those that loved them. They were chess pieces to be maneuvered and sacrificed. If Coin were willing to kill Capitol children in the Hunger Games, she would undoubtedly be willing to in a war.
Haymitch Abernathy, the mentor for Katniss and Peeta in The Hunger Games, won his own Hunger Games through smart tactics and outsmarting his opponents. Winning the Hunger Games came at a great cost for Haymitch, as President Snow ordered the death of his family and girlfriend as punishment for his rebellion.
Gale was responsible for creating weapons that would trigger a second wave of bombs to target first responders and combat healers. This invention potentially ended up killing Prim, but even if he wasn't directly responsible, Katniss found this tactic so abhorrent that she lost her affection for him.
The double bomb that kills Katniss Everdeen's sister, Primrose, was designed by two rebels: Beetee and Gale, Katniss's lifelong friend. Previously, Gale had explained that the double bombs are designed to appeal to mankind's weakness for compassion.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
Katniss is acquitted of murder by reason of insanity and sent home to District 12, while her mother leaves for District 4 and Gale for District 2. Other District 12 natives later return, including Peeta, who has recovered his memories and his love for Katniss.
According to the star behind Effie, Elizabeth Banks, she and Haymitch's Woody Harrelson improvised the scene. Considering she's been adamant about the characters having some romantic connection, it only makes sense that they'd share a goodbye kiss. It's very on-brand for Effie, as well.
