Ares arranged for someone to steal Zeus's master bolt and Hades' helm of darkness in order to start a war among the gods. He framed Percy so that he would end up with the bolt when he reached the Underworld.
Ares admits that while he did not personally steal them, since gods cannot steal each other's symbols of power, he did have someone else take it. Ares wants war, so he framed Percy as the culprit in order to achieve a three-way war against Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades.
Who was Ares? Ares was the ancient Greek god of war or, more properly, the spirit of battle. He represented the distasteful aspects of brutal warfare and slaughter.
Why does Ares want to start a war in Percy Jackson?
As Percy later discovers, this is because Ares is being controlled by Kronos and, on Kronos's orders, is trying to incite war between Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades.
This scene is when Ares is revealed as one of the book's antagonists in a twist that results in a duel between Percy and the God of War. Earlier in the book, Ares comes across as a more benevolent god despite his angry tendencies. He provides Percy, Annabeth, and Grover with supplies for their journey.
Zeus and Hera didn't particularly dislike Ares, they just didn't respect him much. Ares is always portrayed as childish, bloodthirsty, and wild. He will join a battle just to make it bloodier, not caring who lived or died. Athena hated him, and no god respected him except maybe Aphrodite, due to her love for him.
In The Last Olympian, while still hating Percy, Ares likes the idea of making Percy immortal, since that would let him "beat him to a pulp" as often as he feels like it, while Percy will keep coming back for more.
Ares was born millennia ago to Zeus, King of the Old Gods, as one of the latter's many godly children. At an indeterminate point, he witnessed the creation of humanity by his father Zeus. Ares despised the human race that Zeus created, so he began corrupting them with war, blood-thirst, and violence.
For one, Ares did not directly curse Percy in the show like he does in the book. The latter medium makes a note of Ares giving specific parameters for his curse on Percy, such as when the demigod is in battle.
Ares was the Greek god of war. He was perhaps the most unpopular of all the Olympian gods because of his quick temper, aggressiveness, and unquenchable thirst for conflict. Ares famously seduced Aphrodite, unsuccessfully fought with Hercules, and enraged Poseidon by killing his son Halirrhothios.
Despite being a bloodthirsty and dangerous sadist, Ares was actually a sympathetic father, he tried to be to his children, what Zeus had not been for him and was both loving and protective of them.
Weaknesses: Because of his arrogant and brutal nature, Ares can be extremely reckless, overconfident, narcissistic and foolhardy, leading to him making crucial mistakes in a confrontation. He is supremely confident in his abilities, to the point of believing that he is invincible.

Hephaestus seems to enjoy inventing new ways to humiliate them, so Ares and Aphrodite pick the locations for their dates very carefully. Aphrodite also loves Ares more than Hephaestus and has many children with him.
How does Ares's presence affect Percy? Ares's presence makes Percy angry because his power is to crank up the passions so badly that they cloud your ability to think. How does the god of war convince Percy to retrieve his shield? Ares convinces Percy to get his shield by telling him something about his mom.
Kronos' human thief was unexpectedly captured by Ares. The war god meant to keep the magic items for himself, but Kronos bent his will, and caused the god to give the master bolt to Percy, hidden within the magic backpack, so that the young hero might bring it to the Underworld for Kronos.
It was further revealed that the war god had been a pawn of the main antagonist of the series, Kronos. At the climax of the novel, Percy confronted Ares in combat and against all odds defeated him in a duel. In losing the battle, Ares declared his hatred for Percy Jackson.
Luke betrays Percy and the gods because he himself feels betrayed. Luke's anger is prompted by how he feels abandoned by the gods, and this prompts him to use the same manipulation tactics that the gods use.
Was Ares More Evil Than Hades? Hades is the god of the underworld, and while often associated with death, was not considered 'evil. ' Ares's association with the destructive side of war makes him a more controversial figure, though not necessarily more 'evil' than Hades.
Ares embarrassed Zeus and Hera on multiple occasions, such as in his affair with Aphrodite, his excessive violence, and his support of the Trojans in the Trojan War, which betrayed a promise he made to his mother. Not everyone hated Ares though, the militaristic Spartans and Thracians worshipped him.
Though Athena and Ares are half-siblings, the two are always depicted as being at odds with one another. For example, Athena fights with the Greeks in the Trojan War, while Ares fights with the Trojans. During the battle, Athena even attacked Ares with a boulder, only being stopped by their father, Zeus.
While this may seem like a betrayal at first, it was actually Grover playing the part of protector to a tee. Knowing that monsters will find Percy at Yancy, Grover realizes he has to get him away from the school as quickly as possible.
If they were near a pond of some sort, Percy would win easily. In an electrically charged environment, Jason would defeat Percy. There is also the question of how far their abilities can stretch. We know that since Percy can control water, he can possibly control other liquids.
