What is the Hufflepuff motto? “You might belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal, those patient Hufflepuff's are true and unafraid of toil.”
You'll notice the words: patience, dedication, and loyalty adorning the cup. These are all Hufflepuff qualities. A Hufflepuff student who set this excellent example was Cedric Diggory, who showed all of them whilst competing in the Triwizard Tournament.
Hufflepuff refers to one of four Hogwarts houses in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Characters are sorted into these houses based on their characteristics, and Hufflepuff is known for having members that are patient, fair, hard-working, and sometimes blandly nice.

Hufflepuff is my favorite house in some ways. There comes a point in the book where each house has a chance to rise up to a certain challenge. The Slytherins decided they'd rather not play, the Ravenclaws – some play, some won't, but the Hufflepuffs stay to fight.

Slytherin is the most common house in 69 countries across the world. Ravenclaw and Slytherin tie as the most common house in 15 states each. The United States is made up of a majority of Gryffindors (40%). Though the UK has an almost equal split, Hufflepuff is the majority household (27%).
Our introduction to Hufflepuff House may not have been the greatest – Malfoy's disparaging remarks inside Madam Malkin's, Hagrid alluding to Hufflepuff's reputation 'a lot o' duffers' – but in true laid-back Hufflepuff style, they never really seemed to take these unjust judgements to heart.

Gentle Hufflepuff may seem like an odd match with cunning Slytherin, but that's not to say these two couldn't work out. In fact, a Slytherin could give their Hufflepuff partner the confidence and encouragement they need to pursue their dreams.
The badger family is rewarded for their giving nature by being rescued by an avenger spirit who reclaims their home for them. Badgers are also a clan animal in some Native American cultures. This further supports the Hufflepuff tendency of gathering family and friends close.
Helga Hufflepuff (fl. c. 993) was a Welsh witch and was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While the other founders chose to have special students, she accepted them all without preference, although she did want them to be loyal and hard-working.

One of the worst Hufflepuff traits is a lack of competitiveness. This becomes particularly apparent in Harry Potter when it comes to things like Quidditch and the House Cup.
Only Gryffindor and Slytherin are ever mentioned in the books to have won the House Cup. While Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff almost certainly have won the Cup, they have never been presented with it in the books. They may have won it while Harry was at school but during the years not specified.
"However, it's true that Hufflepuff is a bit lacking in one area. We've produced the fewest Dark wizards of any house in this school." The phrase suggests that although they weren't a lot of them, there were at least a few of them.
