Spock had the rank of Captain in Star Trek II and on. But he was Ambassador for the 2 TNG episodes he appeared in, Unification Parts 1 & 2. The only time McCoy was ever referred to as Admiral was during a brief cameo appearance on TNG's pilot episode, Encounter at Farpoint.
