In 1953, Elise Rainier lives in Five Keys, New Mexico, with her parents, Audrey and Gerald, and younger brother, Christian. Elise and Christian encounter a ghost in their bedroom.
Foster Lambert, the middle child of the family and Dalton's younger brother, is now older, but still played by Andrew Astor, who was actually one year younger than Simpkins in the first movie.
As the Insidious main movies and spinoffs took place, fans learned how Elise, due to her psychic visions and ability to traverse the Further, suffered. Her gift turned out to be a curse as it drew a demon over to kill her mother in Insidious: The Last Key.
Carl is a friend of Elise who Elise's assistants called to help the Lambert family again. Like his mentor, he has psychic abilities and can communicate with the denizens of the Further, though he makes use of alphabetical dice to do so.
Also at the funeral, an encounter with Carl (played by Steve Coulter in previous films), the man responsible for erasing Josh's memories, highlights the depths of Josh's amnesia.

As she packs up for the night, Josh hands her his childhood photos, but as she takes them, she gives Josh a strange and startled look, and whips out her camera and snaps a photo of Josh. Furious, Josh goes in a rage and violently strangles Elise to death.
In the end, Elise meets a girl named Allison who is in a "coma" and realizes something rising behind her. Elise is shocked and says "Oh my god!" gasping, hinting a sequel. The thing that was behind Allison is believed to be the red face demon as it made the same crackling sound as it did in Insidious 1.

Elise Returns As A Ghost In Insidious: The Red Door's Ending
Given when the movie takes place, Elise can only appear at the end of Insidious: The Red Door as a ghost. She's already been dead over a decade after Josh strangled her when he was possessed by the Black Bride at the end of Insidious.
The further Josh and Dalton travel into the Further, the harder it is to come back alive. When Josh travels deep into the Further in Insidious to save Dalton, his body is taken over by a demon that kills Elise and nearly murders the entire Lambert family.
Insidious: Chapter 3 is a prequel that revealed more of the personal history between Elise and the Bride In Black, with the latter holding a grudge against the psychic when she prevented the spirit possessing Josh as a child. The Bride In Black reappears throughout the story, vowing to strangle Elise.
The father-son duo successfully exit the hellish afterlife they were in, but not everything's done. Elise notices something off about Josh and takes a picture of him. At that point, she learns that Josh is actually being possessed by the Bride in Black. Before Elise can react, the spirit murders her.
The demon chases them to the red door and Josh stays behind to keep it shut so Dalton will be safe. Dalton returns to his body and paints over his red door painting with black paint, which in turns seals the real door and The Further. Josh meets his father's spirit, who guides him back to the living world.
Why doesn't Josh like his picture taken Insidious?
The more photographs taken of Josh, the closer the shadowy woman begins to get to Josh until she is inches away from him, explaining his fear of photos. Elise suggests that Josh should use his ability to find and help return Dalton's soul, to which Josh agrees.
To understand how the Red Door got opened for Dalton, fans will have to remember the Insidious movie timeline and Elise's pivotal connection to it. In Insidious: The Last Key, Elise inadvertently opened the Red Door when she went into The Further to save her niece Melissa and was trying to get back to the real world.
These red doors, we learn, are controlled by the Keyface Demon. Elise inadvertently leaves the red door to the Lamberts' attic open, suggesting that she's accidentally responsible for kicking off the events of the first film.
Apparently, Ted Garza, corrupted by the same demonic entity that once influenced Elise's father, followed his tradition in kidnapping nurses and chaining them up in the basement. Anna helped Elise find and rescue a woman named Mara Jennings.
The Big Picture. Insidious is not based on a true story, so you don't have to worry about real-life hauntings like in The Conjuring series. The inspiration for Insidious came from Wan and Whannell's desire to make a horror film about astral projection.
