That afternoon, Gatsby gets in his pool for the first time that summer. He is still waiting for a call from Daisy. Nick tries to imagine what it must have been like to be Gatsby and know that your dream was lost.
The phone call is from one of Gatsby's business associates, who is calling long distance from Chicago. The man's name is Slagle and he immediately tells Nick that "Young Parke's in trouble" (Fitzgerald, 177).
Even after the confrontation with Tom, Gatsby is unable to accept that his dream is dead. Though Nick implicitly understands that Daisy is not going to leave Tom for Gatsby under any circumstance, Gatsby continues to insist that she will call him.
In both book and movie, Gatsby is waiting for a phone call from Daisy, but in the film, Nick calls, and Gatsby gets out of the pool when he hears the phone ring. He's then shot, and he dies believing that Daisy was going to ditch Tom and go way with him.
Though Gatsby has always wanted to be rich, his main motivation in acquiring his fortune was his love for Daisy Buchanan, whom he met as a young military officer in Louisville before leaving to fight in World War I in 1917.
Jordan explains that Gatsby has bought the huge house and has been hosting the parties in hopes of attracting Daisy to his house. She tells Nick that Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy to his house for tea so that Gatsby can come over to see her.
The mysterious calls are connected to his shady business dealings. Gatsby is obsessed with winning Daisy back to his side, and he believes that she will never marry a poor man. He wants to provide her with the level of luxury to which she is accustomed.
Three days after the murder of Gatsby, a telegram from his father, 'signed Henry C. Gatz' arrives and, a few days later, Mr. Gatz arrives at the mansion.
Daisy does not want to be seen attending Gatsby's funeral since she does care about her image, despite the fact that she has never loved Tom. As a result, she makes the decision to abstain out of concern that she would damage both her connection with Tom and her standing in the eyes of the general public.
This is at the very end of the novel. Of the late Gatsby, Tom says, “That fellow had it coming to him. He threw dust in your eyes just like he did in Daisy's….” And that's why it matters that Nick is gay and in love with Gatsby: because Tom's assessment is spot-on, but Nick will never admit it.
Ewing Klipspringer phones Nick that night, and Nick tells him about Gatsby's funeral. Klipspringer says he can't make it because he has to go to a picnic in Greenwich, Connecticut.
That night, Klipspringer calls. Nick tells him about the funeral. But Klipspringer says he can't attend because he has to attend a picnic in Greenwich, Connecticut. Klipspringer then asks if Nick could send to him a pair of tennis shoes he had left at Gatsby's mansion.
III, p. 48 (Just after Gatsby introduces himself to Nick, he excuses himself to take a call from Chicago.) Nick, narrating: ...a butler hurried toward him with the information that Chicago was calling him on the wire. The mention of Chicago foreshadows a connection between Gatsby and organized crime.
Gatsby says that he has been waiting there in order to make sure that Tom did not hurt Daisy. He tells Nick that Daisy was driving when the car struck Myrtle, but that he himself will take the blame. Still worried about Daisy, Gatsby sends Nick to check on her.
Gatsby has two purposes in mind when he calls Nick 'old sport'. First, he is attempting to manufacture the sense of closeness with Nick. Everything that Gatsby does is for Daisy, including his befriending of Nick.
Nick tries to imagine what it must have been like to be Gatsby and know that your dream was lost. Gatsby's chauffeur hears gunshots just as Nick pulls up to the house. In the pool, they see Gatsby's dead body, and a little way off in the grass, they see Wilson's body. Wilson has shot Gatsby and then himself.
The most famous murder in American literature is that of the titular hero in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, published in 1925. Jay Gatsby is shot to death in the swimming pool of his mansion by George Wilson, a gas-station owner who believes Gatsby to be the hit-and-run driver who killed his wife, Myrtle.
Nick is left to organise Gatsby's funeral. Daisy and Tom have left town. Wolfshiem refuses to come. Hundreds of people attended Gatsby's parties but no-one comes to his funeral apart from Nick, Gatsby's father, and some servants.
As soon as she realized that Gatsby had not inherited his wealth and had in actuality acquired it illegally, she lost interest in him and remained loyal to Tom, simply because he was made of old money.
I think the funniest thing about this passage is that Gatsby keeps introducing Tom to everyone as “the polo player,” even though Tom doesn't play polo and keeps telling Gatsby to stop calling him that.
We learn from Nick about Gatsby's true origins. His real name is James Gatz. He comes from North Dakota. At the age of 17 he changed his name to Jay Gatsby after meeting a rich mining prospector called Dan Cody.
As it is revealed throughout the novel, the sole purpose of his efforts is to gain the affection of his past lover Daisy Buchanan, whom he deserted five years earlier to go to war. Despite Gatsby's “romantic readiness” (2), as narrator Nick Carraway puts it, he subtly shows that his love for Daisy is never genuine.
The shirts represent the beautiful life that Daisy could have had if she waited for Gatsby. Since she married Tom, she lost her chance at a life with someone she loved and the money she wanted, "It makes me sad because I've never seen such--such beautiful shirts before." (Fitzgerald 92).
Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Daisy does not call Nick after Gatsby's death for several reasons: She doesn't want to be connected to Gatsby since his money was dirty. Daisy is aware of Gatsby's illegal activities and wants to distance herself from him. She and Tom went out of town before his death.
