She resents that Briar Rose fell in love with a hansom man, instead of with her. And then later Maleficent hates Aurora, as a reminder of Briar Rose's rejection.
Maleficent confirms that Aurora will grow in grace and beauty, "beloved by all who know her", but as revenge for not being invited by the kingdom, she curses Aurora so that before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel's spindle and die.
Maleficent had a vendetta against Sleeping Beauty and her mother from the beginning, casting a sleeping curse on Aurora. She traded her sleeping curse for the Dark Curse, which the Evil Queen took back when the sleeping curse on Snow White was undone by Prince Charming's kiss.
Regina and Maleficent remain friends, even after Regina becomes the Evil Queen, and Regina gives the Dark Curse to her in exchange for the Sleeping Curse. Regina later traps Maleficent in the form of a dragon underneath the Storybrooke clock tower for almost 30 years during the first Dark Curse.

She was called "Beastie" by Maleficent. At first, Maleficent hated Aurora, but Maleficent soon had developed a close bond with her, so she now calls Aurora "Beastie" as a nickname and a sign of affection towards her.
Aurora debuted in Sleeping Beauty (1959) as the only daughter of King Stefan and Queen Leah. Angered at not receiving an invitation to her christening, an evil fairy, Maleficent, curses Aurora to prick her finger on a spinning wheel's spindle and die before sunset on her 16th birthday.
She tearfully apologizes to her sleeping goddaughter and gives her a farewell kiss on the forehead. However, just before she can walk away, a miracle happens: Aurora wakes up. Maleficent's strong and genuine motherly love for Aurora was enough to break the curse that she herself had cast.
Weapons and implements made from cold iron are often granted special efficacy against creatures such as fairies and spirits. In the Disney film Maleficent, the title character reveals early on that iron is lethal to fairies, and that the metal burns them on contact.

Her actual name is Princess Aurora, but was given the name Briar Rose when she was living in hiding with the good fairies. Oddly enough, she was unnamed in Perrault's original tale, but did have a daughter named Aurore. The name Briar Rose was given to her by the Brothers Grimm.
Five years after King Stefan's death, Phillip proposes to Aurora, but Maleficent refuses to give her blessing to them due to the latter's distrust of humans (as she feared that Phillip might betray Aurora in the same way that she was betrayed by Stefan).

The evil fairy is very angry about having been forgotten, and as her gift, curses the infant princess so that she will one day prick her finger on a spindle of a spinning wheel and die. The seventh fairy, who has not yet given her gift, attempts to reverse the evil fairy's curse.
This means the earliest likely release date for Maleficent 3 would be 2026 or 2027. This comes down to the franchise's rather ambitious production scope. The second film came with all the thrills of an epic fantasy, and it's likely that Disney would want to top this—and that takes time to achieve.
Shortly after Stefan is done with his chat with Maleficent's wings, Queen Leila dies of an illness, and she never gets the chance to meet her daughter, who on the other hand is unaware of her identity and was not given the chance to learn about her mother due to Stefan's obsession causing him to neglect her as well.
The irony is that Aurora was taken from her mother to protect her from Maleficent, but, to Aurora, Leila is simply the woman who gave birth to her while she refers to Maleficent as her Fairy Godmother.
