Leotardo told Spatafore that he was a disgrace, and he had Gamiello and Torciano beat him to death. He was later found with a pool cue in his anus, a message that he was killed because of his attraction to men.

It nearly works (thanks to Fredo dropping his gun) as Vito is seen droping the oranges he was carrying. However, Vito still manages to survive the attempt.
Vito was betrayed by his driver Paulie Gatto who called in sick the day Vito was shot. Paulie knew that it was more than likely that Fredo, who was imcompetent at defending his father and handling firearms, would be Vito's driver/bodyguard that day.
