Parents need to know that giant-shark thriller Meg 2: The Trench is the sequel to 2018's The Meg, with Jason Statham returning as hero Jonas Taylor. It's a bit better than its bland predecessor, with occasional fun B movie energy, but it's mostly the same lazy, routine stuff.
This lively sequel to 2018's somewhat tepid killer-shark blockbuster greatly improves upon its predecessor by getting gorier, funnier and more stylish.

The second part of the film takes place on some kind of island resort, and here M2 turns in to the poorest kind of "Jurassic World" ripoff, so ridonculously over the top absurd that in the end, M2 will almost surely make my short list of worst movies of the year.

A few of the cast members return for “Meg 2: The Trench” which has adopted the infomercial “That's not all!” mentality that promises 3x as many megalodons, dinosaurs, a kraken, an aquatic version of “Alien,” loads of “Jaws” references, scores of terrorists, villain wannabes, and a rap song by a cast member.
The dialogue in Meg 2 is a bit cheesy at times, but writers Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris did a fantastic job crafting not only a fun action movie, but one that is also hilarious, and thrilling.
Just like the first entry, Meg 2: The Trench is a Chinese-American co-production. Accordingly, the film is geared towards the Chinese market just as much as international audiences, which includes having a major Chinese star like Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior) in a lead role.

May not be everything I wanted The Meg to be, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. If you go into Meg 2: The Trench expecting a good, fun action film then you won't be disappointed.
Is there a The Meg 3 release date? As of August 2023, The Meg 3 doesn't have a release date. If plans for a third movie go ahead, we're betting on it hitting cinemas sometime in 2025 at the earliest.
This film has a lot more jumpscares than the first, that's the scariest part of it though. Jumpscares occur throughout and are loud and scary. In an extremely gruesome scene, the POV of people swallowed by a shark is shown. Its teeth are visible cutting through their bodies with blood leaking from them.

If you just want a big, dumb movie about a giant shark terrorizing a group of ocean-bound scientists and Jason Statham, you could do a lot worse than The Meg. If a movie is filled with stereotypical characters, a generic plot, and a bunch of incongruencies, at least own it. This is where The Meg fails to deliver.
Jason Statham reprises his role as rescue diver Jonas Taylor, who takes on not one ginormous megalodon shark but a trio of them. If that wasn't enough, there is also a humongous octopus, as well as primaeval lizards.
Meg 2: The Trench introduces a secret underwater mining station inside the trench, overseen by the villainous Montes and fueled by an investor of Mana One. The movie reveals that there is a mole inside Mana One, and it is eventually discovered that Jess is the saboteur, working with Montes and betraying her coworkers.
The sequel, directed by Ben Wheatley (“Kill List”), ratchets up the danger when Jonas and Co. have to deal with not one but three megalodons that hunt in a pack, plus other ginormous sea creatures from the trench.

the megalodon could bite into one of the kraken's tentacles tearing it apart. but that wouldn't be enough the kraken would continue to wrap up the megalodon bringing the shark to its mouth. with its giant beak it would bite into the monster shark. one or maybe two bites and the megalodon would be defeated.
