Dean adored his friends and had fun running around with the Rat Pack, but when it came to partying, he was often the first to bail out — opting for some family time, sleep and an early morning game of golf over raucous ragers. The “king of cool” was very much a family man.
A staunch civil-rights advocate who refused to entertain in venues that discriminated against African Americans and Jews, Martin was fiercely proud of his Italian heritage. Indeed, he abhorred “The Godfather”: “I hated that movie, what it did to the Italian people. There was no call for that.”
Martin died of acute respiratory failure on Christmas morning in 1995, at the age of 78, in Beverly Hills, California. A sidenote: Wikipedia says "Martin did not attempt to deliver the lyrics in an authentic Italian accent, but used the accent of an American trying to mimic Italian pronunciation." In fact, Martin's Italian was not that good, judging from his pronunciation in songs like "Volare"!
