Zhao was a major enemy of Team Avatar in most of the events leading up to his siege of the Northern Water Tribe, during which he killed the Moon Spirit at the Spirit Oasis.
Zhao appeared to heed Iroh's warning, releasing Tui back into the water of the oasis, but the spirit was then abruptly murdered by Zhao with a blast of firebending, much to the horror of Katara, Aang, and Iroh.
While Zuko wants to capture the Avatar, Zhao eventually admits he has much bigger plans: He wants to kill the Moon Spirit, thereby eliminating the powers of every waterbender. Zhao is convinced this maneuver will make him a legend and allow him to become the Fire Lord.

Why did Yue sacrifice herself?
Sacrificed herself to save not just the Water Tribe, but the entire world, including the Fire Nation, from destruction and chaos by becoming the Moon Spirit which Zhao previously killed, kissing Sokka goodbye and telling him she would always be with him.
But Raava/Vaatu say they been here since before mankind. And Raava seems to imply the Great Lion Turles were ancient. so the lion turles seem to exist even before Raava/Vaatu time. So with all this in the factor then the Tui and La are the oldest spirits!
Zhao kills the Moon Spirit. Reaching the oasis, Zhao removes the white koi from its pond; as he hoists it over his head in triumph, the full moon above transforms, turning from white to blood-red. Immediately, the waterbending warriors lose their bending abilities, and the Fire Nation troops begin to push forward.
Yes! When the moon spirit was captured and killed by Zhao all waterbenders lost their waterbending. It makes sense because the "strength" Yue says comes from the moon spirit is most likely the ability to waterbend.
The slaying of the Moon aroused the anger of La, the Ocean Spirit, who merged with Aang's Avatar Spirit and used incredibly powerful waterbending together to vanquish most, if not all, of Zhao's fleet. Zhao was taken by the Ocean Spirit.
In the last moments of his life, Wan died fighting in a war either with or alongside the Earth Kingdom, as he was surrounded by multiple large coins that were signature siege weapons of the earthbenders.
Killing the Moon Spirit stopped the water benders from bending, allowing the Fire nation greater domination over the Water tribes and any water benders. Going after the Ocean Spirit would limit the Fire nation's travel.
After Momo is severely injured, Sokka and Yue take him to the North Pole's Oasis. There, Momo is placed in the pool which houses the physical manifestations of the Ocean and Moon Spirits. As Yue alluded to earlier, the Moon Spirit transports some of its life into Momo, healing the brave Lemur.

As of the end of the original movie, Jake has permanently left his human body behind, via a ritual that transplanted his consciousness fully into his Avatar body, so if he is killed, he's gone for good.
Princess Yue sacrificed her life to become the Moon Spirit, essential for the waterbenders' powers to work. Yue is now the spiritual representation of the Moon, not the Moon itself. Even though Yue died, she can still appear in the Netflix series as a spirit projecting herself into the physical world.
Koh. Koh is a particularly creepy spirit in Avatar: The Last Airbender. If you show Koh any emotion, he will steal your face. Koh looks primarily like a shadowy spider, but he constantly changes his mask-like face into the ones he steals.
